About Me

My photo
I am just a mom: a mom of three kids and one of them is hearing impaired. We are a busy family and I am a very busy mom. I want my hearing impaired daughter, Brooke, to have every advantage so I try to incorporate as many lessons and strategies into our every day life. Most of the teaching I do with Brooke is incorporated into our daily routines and parent-directed play. This blog will include some of our formal lessons but mostly it will be learning to listen in the everyday.

Lessons in Learning
Language Experience
Brooke made tea for the Tea Party. She helped measure, pour, and count tea bags.

We planted a few flower seeds in this activity. We focused on the words: water, soil, push, seed, sunshine; as well as counting the seeds.

Jake found a caterpillar which spurred a literature lesson on The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We read the book multiple times and made some lacing cards to use during the reading. As the caterpillar eat, we added the card to the string. It was a great vocabulary lesson (caterpillar, hungry, days of the week, fruits, counting, cocoon, butterfly, and many more words). We also had some sticker sheets we received as a birthday gift that I finally got out to use. I introduced the idea of graphing as we counted the food the caterpillar eat during the week. The girls really surprised me how well they grasped the concept of graphing as well as the vocabulary of MOST and LEAST. We used watercolors to paint a caterpillar and the food. Sadly, the girls gave the caterpillar a little too much water and he did not survive....not to worry, we went looking for another (great vocabulary) and found another.

Letters
We did some letter searches using paint dot bottles. Jake helped Brooke to find the letters.

We focused on Letter Ll this week. Here is Brooke making Ll using the magnetic pom-poms.

Numbers
We focused on the number one. Brooke is putting one sticker into each square that I drew on the paper. Then we counted the total number of stickers.

Here is an umbrella with the numbers 1-5 on it. I let Brooke paint each section of the umbrella and then Brooke used dot stickers to put the correct number of stickers into each section. This was an activity left from last week's theme of umbrellas that we finally got to this week.

Number Match: here we counted hearts and drew a line from the number of hearts to the actual number. Brooke needed a lot of help with this so we only did numbers 1-5.

Brooke and Kate are doing the Ladybug Counting Clips. The girls count the number of dots on the ladybug and add the same number of clothespins to the edge of the clips. You'll notice the 6-10 Number Match that Brooke didn't get too in the tray.

Shapes
These shapes sheets have been laminated and we use dry erase markers to practice drawing the shapes. This activity allows us to review the name of the shapes, the number of sides, and also work on fine motor skills.

This is a ladybug shape puzzle

ColorsThis was a lot of fun. The coloring sheet has numbers 1-6. We took turns rolling the dice and colored that section of the picture. This focused on number recognition as well as colors.

Categorizing

Sorting "Things We Eat" and "Things We Play With"

This sheet is "What's Different?" This was hard so we will need to practice some more with the vocabulary of "different" and "same."

Here we sorted "Bugs" and "Animals."
This week we sorted "Forest Animals" and "Farm Animals" too.

Patterns and Sorting
