This morning after our Lowe's Build and Grow workshop where the kids made a really cool race car, we did some shopping. Daddy spend a long time in the carpet sections, so to keep the kids occupied and behaved, we played a game. In many of the aisles, there are letter markers to help identify the sections - you'll see them near the bottom of the photo. We created a letter recognition game that kept the kids occupied and provided some letter practice. Brooke and Kate were assigned a letter: they had to say the letter, the sound, and a word that started with the letter and then run and stand under it. Of course they needed a little help but it was a good learning experience. To make it a little harder for Jake (and to work on his listening skills which were soaring lacking this morning) I gave him a series of 4 letters. He had to remember the 4 letters in order and run from the first to last. Now, of course, we did not do this in the lighting section! We found a quiet aisle of nuts and bolts. Daddy was able to focus on the carpet, the kids had fun, and Mommy created a learning experience out of a waiting experience - success all around.

- I am just a mom: a mom of three kids and one of them is hearing impaired. We are a busy family and I am a very busy mom. I want my hearing impaired daughter, Brooke, to have every advantage so I try to incorporate as many lessons and strategies into our every day life. Most of the teaching I do with Brooke is incorporated into our daily routines and parent-directed play. This blog will include some of our formal lessons but mostly it will be learning to listen in the everyday.

Lessons in Learning
Language Experience
Brooke and I made some Pumpkin Bread. She loves to help in the kitchen and it is a great time to talk with her and review lots of vocabulary. We even sing songs like, "This is the way we make the bread, make the bread, make the bread. This is the way we make the bread so early in the morning."
Another great vocabulary Experience was Mother's Day. We attended the Lowe's Build and Grow workshop where the kids made planters. We had to follow directions as we worked and then choose a plant we put in the boxes at home.
A Mother's Day breakfast in bed was a special start to the day! Daddy let each child chose an item for breakfast. Jake chose pancakes with strawberries, Kate chose tortilla chips with whip cream (actually kinda good) and Brooke chose a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! It was a wonderful breakfast
Numbers
We have these great number ducks from Discount School Supply. We put them in the pool and Brooke picked out one at a time. We counted the raindrops on the back of the duck and then checked the bottom to see if we counted correctly.
We got a great idea of a Shape Search with rectangles, circles and ovals....both girls loved finding the shapes in our house and really surprised me with how well they did!

Last Week's Lessons
Language Experience
We did some sorting and classifying last week. This idea can from A Mommy's Adventure. This activity was a great Language Experience. It gave us a lot to talk about as we sorted the pictures into two categories. Brooke named the object and the category and we talked about colors, homes, food, size and other topics. I think we will do more of these activities in the coming weeks as it really got Brooke talking and hearing a variety of vocabulary words.
Another great language experience was building, planting and hanging up a bird feeder. Brooke made the bird feeder at the Lowes Build and Grow class with her dad. They painted them at home, Brooke choose a tree to hang it, and then filled it with bird food. This was another great experience to allow her to hear a variety of vocabulary.

Colors and Shapes
Brooke completed the shape puzzles as she matched the shapes to the correct umbrella. An opportunity to talk about colors and shapes.
Counting
Brooke counted umbrellas and marked the correct answer with a magnetic pompom. She practiced counting and colors while enjoying the magnets.
