About Me

My photo
I am just a mom: a mom of three kids and one of them is hearing impaired. We are a busy family and I am a very busy mom. I want my hearing impaired daughter, Brooke, to have every advantage so I try to incorporate as many lessons and strategies into our every day life. Most of the teaching I do with Brooke is incorporated into our daily routines and parent-directed play. This blog will include some of our formal lessons but mostly it will be learning to listen in the everyday.

Why teach Nursery Rhymes

Why teach using Nursery Rhymes? Research shows that children who have memorized nursery rhymes become better readers because they develop an early sensitivity to the sounds of language. (Marie Clay)

Nursery Rhymes naturally help young children develop phonemic awareness skills, which are the necessary building blocks that children need explicit instruction in before they can begin to read.

The skills you can teach through Nursery Rhymes are:
■Rhyming
■Sound/Word Discrimination
■Blending
■Word segmentation (syllables)
■Phoneme manipulation

Nursery Rhymes Can:
■Enrich young children’s vocabulary.
■Provide opportunities for oral language development.
■Introduce children to basic story structure such as problem and solution, cause and effect.
■Be easily integrated into already existing themes.
■Be FUN and engaging for young children.
